In the interest of obtaining more accurate weather data at the Nanwalek airport, where wind can at times be especially severe, Smokey Bay Air pilots took advantage of a formidable opportunity when they noticed a passenger flying on a few of its flights back in 2007. That passenger was Senator Paul Seaton. Paul Seaton was flown into Nanwalek and shown why real time weather data would help improve the safety of operations there. In the fall of 2007 Senator Paul Seaton allocated funds for the purchase of the WeatherHawk 916 Station.
Smokey Bay Air employees installed the station with the help of Carol Kvasnikoff, Jerry Demas, the Nanwalek School, Post Office, Store and Village Council. John Johnston from Weatherhawk provided technical support. Smokey Bay Air will maintain the station and provide up-to-date weather for the Nanwalek airport.
